Our Greener Living Soap Nut Story
A Wife's Perspective
In February 2008, the difficult economy began to take a toll on our family. I began searching everywhere and anywhere I could to cut our monthly budget. I left no stone unturned; phone bill, cell phone bill, Dish TV bill, car, house and health insurances, food bill, trash pickup bill ... you name it. Then, I examined all the things that we used on a regular basis to find ways to cut those costs as well. I had been using a very high end laundry product from Germany since 1994 that was specifically designed for my European front loader washing machine. It worked well but was very expensive. In the effort to cut costs, I made a switch to a wholesale club brand of laundry detergent.
All seemed just fine until a few months later when I broke out from head to toe in a rash. Although I got into the doctor right away, he was unable to determine the cause so he prescribed a 6 day course of prednisone in hopes that would clear it up. I got better for a couple of days but the rash came back with a vengeance. It was at this point that I made the connection between switch to the new laundry detergent and my rash. So, much as I did not want to take anymore drugs, I began another 6 day course of prednisone, then ran out to get some "all natural" laundry detergent at the local health food store. I spent the entire week washing every piece of clothing in my wardrobe. The rash cleared up, the laundry was done, my closet looked great but I had not accomplished what I set out to do which was to lower my cost of doing laundry. In fact, now I had the medical bills to pay as well!
I was, however, very reluctant to switch to anything that was not considered natural. I spent the next year trying out different brands from the health food stores until one day I read the labels more closely on the "all natural" laundry detergents. Well, they did not look as "all natural" as I was looking for; there were still too many ingredients that I could not come close to pronouncing. At this point, I was also battling that awful smell that seems to be inevitable with front loading washers which I later discovered is not the way it has to be.
Back to the internet I went. I searched Google for how to make my own laundry detergent. After watching several You Tube videos, each funnier than the one before, I thought they just had to be kidding! I would give up my monthly trip to Starbuck's instead and buy my laundry detergent. But being who I am, I was not going to be defeated so easily and continued my internet searching. It was at that point that I stumbled upon soap nuts. Now I was on the floor laughing out loud (as you may also be right this minute) and called my family over to share in the fun. When I came back to my senses, I had to ask myself three questions.
Could soap nuts really get my clothes clean?
Could it really be this simple?
Could I save money?
The answer to all three turned out to be "yes." Frankly, I don't think anyone could have been more skeptical than I, so I ordered 6 different brands of soap nuts to "check them out" fully expecting none of them to work even the slightest bit. To my surprise, I discovered that not all soap nuts are created equal! Makes sense, I guess, not all fruit is the same quality or taste the same, so why should all soap nuts perform the same? I loved the results I got using the Greener Living Soap Nuts more than any of the others: some of which cost less, some of which cost quite a bit more.
